I have recently set up a custom domain with ssl support and endeavoured to migrate my blogs (previously hosted on WordPress) and research blogs (previously built by Jekyll served on GitHub Pages) to my sub domains.

Jekyll has rich markdown support, and can be configured to generate bibliography entries from bib libraries using third party gems (thus cannot be served on GitHub Pages), which makes it appealing to log down research by self-hosting.

WordPress is easy to manage media contents and can be linked to Ulysses say, thus making blogging more convenient.
